Caria Fig · Framed painting [1/1] (100 x 73 cm)

Caria Fig starts with the color of a fig at its peak ripeness. The eggplant field recalls the fruit's dark skin, while the olive green retains the color of the stem, the leaves, and the unripe fig. The ivory line stems from a less visible detail: when a branch or an unripe fruit is cut, the fig tree releases a thick, white latex, that fig milk. The line runs through the composition like freshly exposed sap, and the three small crosses function as discreet cut marks.

The name comes from Ficus carica, the botanical name for the fig tree. Carica refers to the ancient region of Caria, in the southwest of present-day Turkey, historically known for fig cultivation. We did not want to represent the fruit literally, but rather reduce it to three elements: skin, leaf, and sap.
