Designer's note

Cinnabar takes its name from cinnabar, the mineral from which the vermilion pigment is obtained. For centuries, this red was used in China and Japan in paintings, lacquers, and seals, where it appeared alongside black ink as a precise mark within the composition. In Kōyasan, it also became linked to the objects in its temples, many of which are finished in vermilion lacquer.

The great circle stems from that relationship between pigment and brush, and also from Kūkai, founder of Kōyasan, who studied in China and was one of the great calligraphers of his time. Against the cream background, the stroke retains the fluidity of a form created in a single movement; the small blue accents break the historical reference and bring the composition into a more contemporary language.
